This recipe comes from my mom’s old black and white composition, a homemade cookbook. We Phillips kids loved setting up an assembly line to help cut the cookies out and to decorate them. At the time when I remember making this vivid memory was in the early sixties. Mother and her young helpers prepared a box of cookies and fudge in a huge white coat box for Daddy’s workers at Ford Motor Company. I treasure the memory of doing that in our little white farmhouse in Highland County, Ohio. Daddy said the workers loved (devoured) our gift.
Of course, these were the cookies we made each year and set out a few on a plate with a cup of milk for Santa on Christmas Eve. Every year, he devoured them, too.

Sugar Cookie Cut-Outs
- Cut-Out Cookies
1¾ cup sifted flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter (1 stick softened)
1 cup sugar
Flavoring Choices: ¾ teaspoon nutmeg; or 1 teaspoon lemon rind; or 1 teaspoon vanilla; or ½ teaspoon vanilla plus ½ teaspoon almond extract.
- Homemade Icing
3 cups powdered sugar
1/3 cup butter, softened
1 ½ teaspoon vanilla
2 tablespoons milk
food coloring if desired
- Cream butter. Blend in sugar, then add eggs and flavoring.
Sift all dry ingredients together then gradually add to creamed mixture to make a dough. (If too stiff add a dab of milk.)
- Flour your surface and form about a six-inch round dough patty. Sprinkle a little flour on top. Roll your dough out with your favorite rolling pin a bout ¼ inch. Dip cookie cutter in flour and press onto dough. Wiggle it slightly to release.
- Place on a greased cookie sheet. Sprinkle with decorations if desired. Bake at 375 degrees for about 6 minutes. Edges should be just starting to show a little golden brown. Do not over bake.
- After cookies are cooled you can make colored icing to decorate or buy store bought.
- For icing: Mix all ingredients together until smooth. Then decorate!
